To Immigrate or Stagnate?

imagesreformRecently, I heard one of the sillier excuses against immigration reform coming from house speaker Boehner that I’ve ever heard. This was in respect to voting on, and passing, an immigration reform bill any time soon.

“There’s widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws, and it’s going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes,” Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters Thursday.

imagesJohnBIn other words, what he’s really saying is that Republicans need a President who thinks more like they do and they’re not likely to do anything until that happens, which obviously wont be before next election if at all. Isn’t that kind of like a street bum telling Peyton Manning he can’t quarterback a football team? Or maybe a bat boy telling Hank Aaron he doesn’t know how to hit? Any way you look at it, it’s spineless and bogus! To me, Boehner would be much better suited being a character actor on a TV show like Cheers rather than trying to act like he knows what he’s doing as Speaker of the House! I’ve always envisioned him hanging out at the bar with Cliffie and Nawm, bumming free drinks from Woody or Coach, staying clear of Carla, and offering to sweep up the place at closing time if Sam will cover his tab!

Now, this same person is using a lame assed excuse like mistrust of the President to cover his inability to override the wishes of his real bosses, the Tea Party, and initiate an important issue like Immigration Reform. It’s long overdue, it’s needed, and for more reasons than can be brought forth here, it makes fiscal and financial sense. Trouble is, more of these immigrants would likely vote Democrat rather than Republican, and that scares the daylights out of Boehner’s side of the political fence so it’s probably not going to happen!

This year, our wonderful hardworking politicians are going to be in session 113 days. That equates to about 17.5 hours per week or basically a part time job. For all that heavy lifting they are paid $174,000.00 annually which works out to roughly $1540.00 per day or roughly $192.00 per hour if they work a full day which seldom, if ever, happens. Seemingly, they spend most of their time being wined and dined by fat lobbyists with fat checkbooks talking about fat deals which have nothing to do with the hard working voters who put them there in the first place. On top of all that, they enjoy a host of benefits paid for by hard working tax payer/voters who are being forced closer and closer to the edge of bankruptcy just to make ends meet.

For this mere pittance of $174,000, (Boehner gets $223,500) they get to vote on matters of vast importance to our country like reducing food stamp programs for the poor, and school lunch programs for kids, and saying they don’t trust the President etc. Don’t bother them with things like failing education systems, crumbling infrastructure, chemical spills, water safety or problems that mundane. Lets just close our eyes, stick our heads in the sand, and keep telling ourselves we’re the greatest! Besides, there’s more important things to worry about like upcoming elections, and who is going to control the House and Senate right?

There was an old film entitled “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” which had a song in it sung by Bing Crosby that I believe went something like; “We’re busily doing nothing, working the whole day through, Trying to find lots of things not to do!” Kind of a familiar little ditty when we’re talking about our current political system in Washington DC right?

So…..back to our story title, and three guesses as to which way I believe our friend Boehner is going to go. Naturally, the first two don’t count. If you say STAGNATE, then by golly, I believe you’re catching on!

As usual send me your critiques and comments (which I really enjoy.) I’ll be sure to read them all and use them if I can.

Thanks again,
Rod
