Higher Education ?$?$

imagesloansSo here we are, getting ready to make the big jump from high school to college and many hopeful, would be students are finding out that, as of 7/1/2013, interest rates on college loans are jumping from 3.4% to 6.8%!

For that wonderful news we owe our thanks to the inability of our political whiz kids in Washington D.C. to do anything about holding college loan rates in line. Loan interest rates which many feel are already too high, are going to be exactly double.

Is it my imagination or does Congress seem to be intent on letting things that might help our kids out just the tiniest little bit go to hell in a hand basket? They’re not getting any breaks on tuition or books or living accommodations or anything else that I can think of, and now this? Why the hell would you want to bury yourself in debt to get a better education when you’re going to have to spend half of the rest of your life working two jobs just to pay for it?

Somehow, some way, things feel out of balance to me. Issues that you would think are just plain old, everyday common sense stuff, Congress just doesn’t seem to get a handle on at all. With their job approval rating soaring to the lofty heights around 6%, it’s hard to figure out whether they don’t know or simply don’t care about this problem. Our country is just now staggering back onto it’s feet after eight years of an unnecessary war and recession and yet abortion and repeal of Obamacare seem to be the only things permanently front and center on the congressional agenda while everything else gets pushed to the side or just gets forgotten altogether. Bridges are falling down and highways are falling apart and yet we’re like Nero at the fire fiddling away while Rome burns!

Who was it that said money is the root of all evil? Maybe I missed something but as far as I know, not one banker has had to pay anything back for the billions that were stolen from unfortunate home buyers on those horrible shyster loans. Now, we’re trying to soak it to our kids who are only trying to get a better education and just maybe……make our world a better place for those who follow in their footsteps.

I know I need to apologize up front for my attitude, and I will, just as soon as I feel that our political leaders have seen the light and are willing to do something for the future besides feather their own personal nests. I’m not just talking about the future for our kids going off to college but our whole education system which is under attack from special interests. Our infrastructure which is falling apart due to old age and sometimes just plain neglect. Our environment which is being bombarded by special interests and huge conglomerates with mountains of money who don’t seem to give a damn about the common good as long as their own greed and personal goals are met.

I believe Lucy in the cartoon above has it just about right. Soaking our kids with these college loan rates is obscene, and making people wait six or seven hours just to cast a vote or otherwise restricting their right to vote is obstruction. Pictures of old white men signing bills into law which destroy a woman’s right to determine her own reproductive health care are things that should never be forgotten if we want to continue calling this a democracy.

Elections do have consequences and I do hope that every one of these college students of voting age, who are having some of the most enjoyable years of their life stolen from them because of political inaction and mountains of senseless debt remembers that when its their turn in the voting booth!

As usual send me your critiques and comments and I’ll use them if I can.

Thanks again,
Rod
