So here we are, the golden years. The time when the work’s all done, the crops are in, and it’s time to find the easy chair, sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of all that labor? Boy, wouldn’t that be sweet?
The sign above says, The World’s Longest Coffee Break, but from where I sit, not very many seniors these days know what retirement is, or have time to worry about that for very long!
Statistics tell us that rather than sitting around with our feet up, by 2016, the head count for full time working seniors (75 and over) is going to climb by 84.3%. By 2016 the number of senior workers 65 and over is going to reach 6.1% of the total work force! That’s a big jump from the 3.6% share it was as recently as 2006.
Recently, I wrote about all the men that are missing in the retirement communities I visit. That’s true, women do outlive men by a wide margin but another sad fact of life is that these days, you wont find as many men in retirement communities as in years gone by because they’re still out there working and retirement isn’t an option! Problem is, as some wise person said, there’s just too much month at the end of the money!
So now that we’ve finally figured out who’s actually running the country these days, maybe it’s time we got a few things changed around to reflect reality a little better.
#1 Change the speed limit to 35mph. I know you’re in a hurry to get there, but I’m pretty sure that whatever Mall or Walmart store you’re headed for is probably still gonna be there when you finally show up five minutes later!
#2 We need to change the national anthem and here’s the song on the internet that gets my vote. If you get on your computer (ask one of your kids if you don’t know how!) and Google up a song called “Senior Moments,” then you’ll know what I’m talking about. It has plenty of words but one verse goes like this;
‘Well I was standin’ in the kitchen and I opened up the ‘fridge,
and I stood there for the longest time wonderin’ why I did
I couldn’t think of one good reason so I finally closed the door……..
wonderin’ what I put in there and did I want some more! SENIOR MOMENTS ETC.
3) That perfectly describes seniorhood to me! I also believe we need to change the labor laws so that they reflect the will of older people a little better. In other words, every time our trusted political representatives in Washington DC decide to take a few days off for a well deserved recess, why……..we’ll just do the same thing! Like Larry the Cable Guy says, “Shut ‘er down!” That works for me!
Of course, like our political representatives, all these “down days” will be paid with full benefits and no loss of seniority or any other foolishness like that! We don’t want to discriminate against our senior workers now do we?
I know there’s probably plenty of you out there who will have suggestions as to all the best ways to make this work, but my thoughts are, that if our seniors must work, then let’s have them working at the same mind boggling warp speed as our political representatives in Washington DC! I know it’ll be tough keeping up, but hey……..seniors are made of tough stuff!
See you out there on the job!
As usual, send me your critiques and comments and I’ll use them if I can.
